Join George Hoad AM for a romp through some of the best Arts & Crafts gardens in the UK when he presents the next HMAA webinar on June 17 at 1pm.
The Arts & Crafts Movement took root in mid-Victorian Britian from about 1880 to 1920 and became the predominant fashion in the decorative and fine arts. The Movement was a reaction against the mass production of goods brought about by the industrial revolution that valued quantity over quality and mechanisation over craftsmanship. The Arts & Crafts Movement, championed by such luminaries as John Ruskin, William Morris and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, advocated traditional craftsmanship, simple forms, and the use of natural materials.

It also had a huge influence on the design and construction of houses of this period, reviving traditional craftsmanship and restoring simplicity and honesty in the buildings and the furnishings within. Its influence spilled into gardens, which were designed to compliment the house with outdoor rooms and featured the use of hand-crafted and local materials with a strong formal structure softened with artistic plantings of shrubs, annuals and perennials.
The greatest exponents of the Arts & Crafts style in the garden were the pairing of Gertrude Jekyll and Sir Edwin Lutyens, along with William Robinson, Harold Peto and Thomas Mawson.
Over the past 40 years, George Hoad AM has visited most of the notable Arts & Crafts gardens in the UK. His talk will highlight their beauty, influence and history.
