Monty Don leaves BBC garden show after 23 years

Monty Don with his Golden Retriever, Ned, who has been part of the show for many years, announcing he is stepping down from Gardener’s World at the end of this series.

In what he described as “a big piece of news he wanted to share” Monty Don, 71, has announced his decision to leave his role as host of the top BBC gardening show, Gardener’s World. He said in a public announcement on his Facebook page that he enjoyed his time with Gardener’s World and sharing both the evolution of his garden and his daily life with his dogs with his audience. He will leave at the end of this series (series 57).

Although stepping down from the hour-long weekly show, Monty hinted that he is looking forward to new adventures. In the announcement he said: ““There are more books to write, more programs to make.”

As well as hosting Gardener’s World, Monty has also presented a number of shows focussed on gardens both in the UK and around the world including Around the world in 80 gardens and recently Monty Don’s British Gardens.

Monty’s announced has devasted his legion of fans and gardeners around the world. Other popular and long-running presenters include Percy Thrower, Geoff Hamilton and Alan Titchmarsh.

While the new host has yet to be announced, contenders include designer Jamie Butterworth and Gardener’s World presenters Adam Frost (who has hosted the show) and Frances Tophill.
