Published this month is a book that sets out to separate garden and plant myth from fact. The Sceptical Botanist by Tim Entwisle (CSIRO Publishing, 2025), subtitled ‘separating fact from fiction’, delves into issues such as are plants intelligent, do they communicate, can they tell the time, do they grow in recognisable mathematical sequences and the effect (or not) of the moon on planting times, along with a host of other claims made about plants. Each issue is examined, explained and considered by this sceptical botanist, with some upheld and others dismissed – or at least put aside. As Tim gently concludes: “…my goal, generally, has been to explore a topic with a sensibly open mind and without malice”.
Bringing together essays, some written over many years, it also includes updates that respond to new research or observation (and lots and lots of end notes). It is an intriguing read, amusing and always easy to follow and understand. Adding to the book’s charm (it has a wonderful cover image) are the drawings contributed by of his son Jerome.
Tim is a great communicator and a member of HMAA. Formerly Director of the botanic gardens in both Sydney and Melbourne, he also held a senior role at Kew Gardens in London. He regularly shares his thoughts via articles in gardening magazines (including Gardening Australia magazine), blogs, on radio and via podcast.
Tim’s book is a must-have for the plant curious and anyone communicating in horticultural media.
