Icebergs getting smaller
Compact vegies are popular commercially and in home gardens. Small Cos lettuce such as Gem have long been available but it looks as if the world’s favourite lettuce, Iceberg, is also shrinking – a lot. A small form of Iceberg is on show at an organic produce summit in Monterey in the US this month. The compact lettuce is about the size of a hamburger bun when halved (possibly a prime market) and fits in the palm of your hand reports exhibitor Braga Fresh. The lettuce is sweet, crunchy and quicker to produce than a standard Iceberg. The lettuces are being sold in the US in packs of two.
