Judy Horton reflects on receiving a Gold Laurel in 2009 and is looking forward to the 2026 Neutrog HMAA Laurels Dinner on Thursday, September 3 at Carrick Hill Estate in Adelaide.
When I was awarded the HMAA Hall of Fame Gold Laurel in 2009 I was incredibly honoured but particularly humbled by the standing of my fellow winners, Colin Campbell and George Jones, both of whom have since sadly passed away.
Brisbane-based Colin was one of the original presenters on the ABC Gardening Australia television show and for many years answered questions on Brisbane’s 4BC. He wrote regularly for both trade and popular horticulture and gardening magazines and newspapers, spoke at shows and events, led tours and always encouraged gardeners of all ages. He did all this with his trademark larrikin good humour. Everyone loved him.
George inaugurated the Friends of the Geelong Botanic Gardens and was always the Gardens’ strongest advocate. His Growing Together books were added to many international libraries, and he wrote consistently for gardening publications, including producing more than 1000 weekly articles for the Geelong Advertiser. He was a charming, unassuming man who left a great horticultural legacy. Read HMAA member Gail Thomas’s tribute here on the Friends of GBG website.
When Colin and I were presented with our Hall of Fame trophies at The Laurels awards’ night in Adelaide in 2009, George was unable to be present. Fortunately, we were able to arrange an unforgettable get together in the Geelong Botanic Gardens later. How thrilled I was to share this honour with such giants of our industry.
Who will be honoured with the Hall of Fame Gold Laurel at this year’s event? To be one of the first to know. Book here for the dinner and associated events.
