New Australian innovation helps tackle two major environmental challenges: food waste and declining soil health

Victoria-based environmental company Eco Guardians is helping close the loop between food waste and soil health with the launch of SoilFood™, a microbial soil stimulant made entirely from recycled food waste.

Developed as part of a circular economy model, SoilFood™ diverts organic material from landfill and transforms it into a pathogen-free soil amendment designed to support soil biology, nutrient cycling and long-term soil function. According to SoilFood, every tonne of product produced diverts approximately five tonnes of food waste from landfill while reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with organic waste decomposition.

The launch comes at a time when growers, landscapers, councils and home gardeners are increasingly seeking sustainable solutions to improve soil performance while reducing environmental impacts.

“Soil health and food waste are often viewed as separate issues, but they’re intrinsically linked,” said Marcelle Swanson, Horticulturist and spokesperson for Eco Guardians. “Organic matter that ends up in landfill becomes an environmental liability and breaks the nutrient cycle. When returned to the soil, it becomes a valuable resource that helps support microbial activity, nutrient availability and soil resilience.”

Unlike conventional fertilisers that focus primarily on feeding plants, SoilFood™ is designed to feed the soil microbiome. The product contains high levels of organic matter and carbon alongside a broad spectrum of nutrients that support beneficial soil microbes and natural nutrient cycling processes.

Independent testing indicates SoilFood™ exceeds Australian Standards for organic soil conditioners and composts, while remaining pathogen-free and suitable for use across horticulture, agriculture, landscaping, turf management and home gardens.

The product reflects a growing industry shift towards regenerative and biologically focused soil management practices. Increasingly, growers are recognising the importance of soil organic matter and microbial diversity in supporting water retention, nutrient efficiency and plant performance.

Eco Guardians believes circular solutions such as SoilFood™ can play an important role in helping Australia address both food waste and soil degradation challenges.

“Soil is one of our most valuable resources, yet we’re continually removing nutrients and organic matter from it,” added Marcelle. “Our goal is to help return those resources to the soil in a safe, practical and scalable way.”

SoilFood™ is produced in Australia using Australian food waste streams and is available in both retail and commercial formats.
