New data reveals trends in plant breeders’ rights

IP Australia has released the Australian IP Report 2026, including the latest trends in plant breeder’s rights (PBRs) filings.

PBRs play a critical role in protecting plant varieties that are novel, distinct, uniform and stable – helping breeders and growers commercialise innovations while supporting long-term industry growth and competitiveness.

Chapter 5 of the report highlights the growing importance of PBRs in supporting innovation across Australia’s horticulture and agriculture sectors. The data points to continued investment in developing new plant varieties, particularly those offering improved productivity, climate resilience and consumer appeal.
