Time for gardeners to get planting

The conflict in the Middle East and the global fuel drought may see more gardeners planting vegetables this autumn. According to reports from farming groups, farmers are slashing plantings due to forecast fuel and fertiliser shortages.

See more details in this report in Good Fruit & Vegetables which suggests growers are cutting or even stopping their planting due to the uncertainty.

A snap survey of 150 growers by peak grower body AUSVEG this week found 27 per cent have reduced or stopped planting schedules, and a further 13 per cent were considering their options. Some crops already growing may not be harvested.

The flow on will mean higher vegetable prices over the months ahead.
