Members and guests of the Horticulture Media Association of South Australia enjoyed a behind‑the‑scenes experience at the iconic Adelaide Oval. HMASA Secretary, Victoria Pearce, reports.
The exclusive tour offered a rare opportunity to step onto the world‑class turf and hear directly from one of Adelaide Oval’s senior grounds people during a private Turf Talk session. Led by seasoned tour guide Neil Smith, attendees were treated to fascinating insights into the rich history of the Oval, setting the scene for a compelling afternoon.
This was complemented by an outstanding presentation from one of the key grounds staff, who shared the meticulous care, innovation and expertise required to keep the Oval’s playing surface in peak condition year‑round. Perfectly timed, the tour took place just days before the first AFL match of the season and only three days after the final scheduled cricket match, offering a rare glimpse into the transport and preparation of the Oval’s drop‑in pitches during one of the busiest periods of the sporting calendar.
Following the Turf Talk, the group ventured inside the heritage‑listed scoreboard, discovering how this much‑loved landmark continues to operate some 115 years after its construction.
To round out the afternoon, participants enjoyed a gentle walk through the historic plantings surrounding Adelaide Oval with Adelaide City Council horticulturist Nikki Firth and arborist Matt Baxter. Nikki and Matt highlighted the significant trees and landscapes that frame the Oval, showcasing an important green legacy that enhances the setting of this iconic venue.
If you are intending to visit Adelaide during September for the Laurels and you love the history of football or cricket this tour can be booked online at Adelaide Oval Tours.
