Warning as death cap mushrooms spread across New South Wales

With death cap mushroom poisoning in Victoria in the news due to the murder trial of Erin Patterson in Gippsland, the dangerous fungi is making news further north where wet conditions has encouraged fungal growth.

With a rise in rainfall and ideal fungi growing conditions, death cap mushrooms have spread across New South Wales said Chief Scientist, Professor Brett Summerell, from Botanic Gardens of Sydney. He has warned foraging enthusiasts to avoid collecting any wild mushrooms as it can be “quite difficult” to tell the “good ones from the bad ones”.

His warning was carried on the ABC News.
“The best thing to do unless they’re somebody who really is an expert on these things, is to not forage in the wild and to get their mushrooms from a store-bought location,” Brett said.
