Queensland HMAA and Australian Institute of Horticulture (AIH) members recently visited the nursery run by Aloe Aloe Horticulture at Toowong in Brisbane where they met Managing Director, Michael Dent, and enjoyed a tour. Sharon Crabbe reports on the visit and shares photos of the aloes, which were in full bloom.
Having had the opportunity to source plants from Aloe Aloe’s nursery for retail purposes, I’ve consistently been impressed by the quality of the stock and the professionalism of dealing with Mike—it has always been a pleasure.
So, when I learned the nursery would be opening its doors to industry members, I didn’t hesitate to take part. On a beautiful winter’s day, I joined members of the HMAA and AIH for a guided tour of the nursery grounds. Mike generously shared his time and expertise, answering our questions and offering insights into both established varieties and upcoming releases, as well as the unique growing conditions at the nursery.
As with all plant species, each has its own characteristics and quirks. This visit provided a valuable opportunity to observe their physical traits, understand hybridisation techniques, and appreciate the diverse growth habits of different aloe species and varieties.
I gained a wealth of knowledge during the visit and am truly grateful for the experience. This deeper understanding allows me to make more informed choices when selecting the most appropriate species for various applications.
