Last weekend was the 50th anniversary of Wittunga Botanic Garden in South Australia. It was celebrated with a community picnic set among the spring blooms.
Originally gifted to the state by the Ashby family, Wittunga officially opened to the public as a botanic garden in 1975. Since then, it has become a treasured green space, known for its rich biodiversity and fascinating history.
To commemorate the occasion, Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia joined local children to plant a native grey box (Eucalyptus microcarpa).
Other official guests included The Honourable Catherine Hutchesson, Member for Waite, Chris Daniels, Chair of the Board of Green Adelaide, Judy Potter, Chair of the Board of Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium and Jason Tyndall, CEO of Nature Play.
Also celebrating the occasion was HMAA member Sophie Thomson who said: “What a gift is a garden that keeps on giving and now recognised with a 50 year celebration!”
Wittunga Botanic Garden is a 13-hectare garden in Blackwood featuring water-wise plants from both Australia and South Africa and part of the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium of South Australia.
