Queensland members of HMAA recently toured a production nursery in Brisbane. David Furness reports.
Pine Mountain Nursery is a family owned and managed business that has been producing quality plants for more than 30 years. It is located on the beautiful mid-upper reaches of the Brisbane River at Pine Mountain about 20 minutes downstream from Wivenhoe Dam.
Owners John and Gail Craigie breed, grow and supply direct a variety of beautiful quality plants. The nursery has a solid collector base with unique and rare plants shipped to all states except Tasmania and Western Australia. The nursery specialises in warm-climate bulbs but the jewels in the crown are clivia and agapanthus species and cultivars.
In particular, the Craigies have bred many excellent varieties of agapanthus including ‘Queen Mum’ and ‘Cloudy Days’, which are both evergreen with white and blue flowers with a low seed set. The Craigies’ agapanthus are marketed under the trademarked brand Best Agapanthus and showcased on the Best Agapanthus website.
While the agapanthus were not in flower for the visit, the clivias were in full bloom – the range of colours and leaf variegations were astonishing and delighted all! In addition, many of the clivias in bloom were many petalled. Instead of the usual six petals per flower, there were varieties with 12 and up to 30 petals for doubles.
For more information see the nursery’s website.
