The Victorian Schools Garden Program, which was established in 1977, has announced a record number of schools taking part in 2025. HMAA sponsors the award for Best Habitat School Garden.
“This year marks our third consecutive record-breaking year, underscoring the growing momentum and impact of school garden initiatives across the state.
“We received an unprecedented 950 grant applications from 461 schools, a significant increase from last year’s 810 applications submitted by 386 schools.
“This growth demonstrates the expanding interest in and commitment to integrating garden-based learning into school communities but also highlights a pressing need: more funding is urgently required to meet the growing demand for school gardens. These green spaces provide essential hands-on learning opportunities, promote health and wellbeing, and foster environmental stewardship.
“Judging of the applications has commenced, with final results to be communicated early to mid-June.”
HMAA Executive Committee member Chloe Thomson will present the HMAA award later in the year in Victoria. See more about the program and awards on the VSGP website.
