Here’s a good news update from Phil, who has been on the sick list.
I can’t express how happy I was to be back on ABC North Coast for the gardening show with Angela Catterns on Saturday after an extended break.
On September 1, I suffered a haemorrhagic stroke caused by a ruptured AVM (arteriovenous malformation), which landed me in hospital for three weeks. I’ve been making steady progress, with no obvious complications so far. My energy levels are still pretty low, but I’m managing to do a little more each day.
My wife has been amazing, looking after absolutely everything in my absence under extremely stressful circumstances… including the enormous task of being promoted to head gardener overnight, and without notice!
I’ve been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from family, friends and colleagues. It’s meant a great deal to me and has had a hugely positive effect on my recovery.
A special thank you to Pauline Haydock from Daleys Fruit Tree Nursery for stepping in on the radio while I was away. I really appreciate you keeping the gardening conversation going in my absence, Pauline.
The flowers in the photo are clivias grown lovingly from seed by Ange. It was such a special treat to see them when I walked into the studio, and to be welcomed back so warmly by Ange and Renata.
So, what does the future look like for me? At this stage, I’m just taking each day as it comes, enjoying a slightly slower pace and having more time to ‘smell the roses’.
One thing’s for certain, though. I’ll be gardening my heart out and continuing to share my thoughts, experiences and insights with you here.
It’s good to be back.
Phil Dudman, Lismore
