Postcard from Mayfield Garden

A September day in Mayfield Garden in Oberon, NSW was spent wandering the largest privately owned cool-climate gardens in Australia.

Open year-round, it features 36 acres of public gardens with ponds, water features, amazing hedges, alleys, informal and formal plantings. The larger Hawkins’ Family Garden opens only during seasonal festivals.

Spring flowering and new leaf was visually stunning. Autumn would be just as stunning with many autumn vivid colours.

The garden is well maintained by a team of 12 permanent ground staff, very peaceful, and offers plenty of walking paths and hidden corners.

The on-site café was popular with fresh food, good service and live singing from a single guitarist .

Expect to spend at least four hours to experience the gardens. Although busy in September there was no ‘crushing’ crowds.

Comfortable shoes and water are a must.

Overall, it was a rewarding destination for nature lovers and garden enthusiasts in the NSW Central Highlands. Package the trip with time in Orange, Little Hartley, Jenolan Caves and at least four days to enjoy the beauty of the region.
