Michael Keelan receives the Doug Smart Award of Merit

The Doug Smart Award of Merit is given for outstanding service to the Nursery and Garden Industry SA by a non-member. This year the award was presented to HMAA member and 5aa gardening presenter Michael Keelan. In making the presentation, NGISA President David Eaton gave the following speech.

This year’s Doug Smart Award Merit Award goes to someone we all know and love… most of us have known him for many years. In fact, it would be well over 50 years ago that he began his heartfelt challenge to spread the word on the joys and merits of gardening.

He has inspired and helped young gardeners, older gardeners, children and certainly those who claim they don’t have a green thumb. He’s worked tirelessly to inform, educate and advise thousands of listeners, viewers and readers of various publications.

This man surely has gardening in his blood as he virtually grew up in a family that loved plants and nature: possibly his first paid job was to rake up leaves in the family garden centre and from that day on he has continued on an exciting journey to spread the word on the pleasures and exciting challenges of gardening.

Today we salute a mentor. For many, he has helped our small businesses, our garden centres and nurseries, our wonderful historic parks and gardens and the growing horticultural world not just in South Australia but right around the country.

Michael Keelan is a worthy recipient of the Nursery and Garden Industry’s DOUG SMART AWARD OF MERIT, who has demonstrated commitment and dedication not just to our industry but to the community in general.
