World-renowned breeder Raadschelders Varens (Ferns) has discovered a new Phelbodium amongst a sea of thousands. Knowing that they had found something truly unique, the single sport was taken and isolated to be trialled. This new sport proved significantly different to Phlebodium Blue Star; instead, Phlebodium aureum ‘Davana’ features beautiful curly serrated foliage with even more intense glaucous colouring that continued to improve as the plant matured. After repeated propagation, trialling, and dedicated hard work, Dutch breeder Kwekerji Raadschelders was ready to introduce this new Phlebodium to the world.
Phlebodium aureum ‘Davana’ was announced as the winner of the prestigious Royal FloraHolland Glass Tulip Award 2020 for the best plant in the greenhouse plant category. ‘Davana’ was described as having a “Fantastic leaf shape, and that the colour of the leaf has really been renewed”. With a unique wavey leaf margin, this new form gives a voluminous appearance that provides the perfect indoor styling effect for home decorators and indoor gardeners.
After ‘Davana’s continued success, Raadschelders Varens was ready to venture further and has partnered with Plants Management Australia (PMA) to bring this new form to Australia. Phlebodium aureum ‘Davana’ is becoming ingrained in homes nationwide, with gardeners eagerly looking to add this new fern to their home interiors. Ticking all the boxes, ‘Davana’ is suitable for low and bright-light areas of the home, has moderate watering requirements and has very few maintenance needs. This impressive addition to homes can also be enjoyed outdoors, where it can be planted in shaded areas in humus-rich soils. With excellent performance, Phlebodium aureum ‘Davana’’ is an exceptionally tough plant suitable for a first-time gardener or avid plant collector. Phlebodium aureum ‘Davana’ has been successfully trialled all over Australia from far north Queensland to southern Tasmania.
