His award was celebrated at a gathering of HMAA members and guests at a dinner held in conjunction with the Queensland Garden Expo at Nambour this week. Matt served as HMAA President for four years until 2023 and was also President of HMAA NSW and Vice-President of HMAA.

Matthew Carroll has been awarded HMAA Life Membership. The award was presented at a dinner at Nambour held during the Queensland Garden Expo. The dinner was attended by a large contingent of HMAA members and other colleagues who were taking part in QGE. George Hoad, HMAA Secretary, and Annette Irish, HMAA Treasurer, presented the award and this citation.

One of the greatest honours an organisation can bestow upon a member is Life Membership and the HMAA is very proud to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contribution, years of dedicated service and inspiring leadership given by one of its most committed members – Matthew Carroll.

A longtime HMAA member, Matt was elected onto the HMAA Committee in 2015, served two years as Secretary and in 2017 was elected as Vice President, taking over from Jim Fogarty in 2019 as HMAA President. Matt served as HMAA President for four years, retiring in 2023. Matt was also the President of HMA NSW from March 2016 until the branch disbanded in 2021.

During Matt’s years as HMAA Vice President and as President, he oversaw and was instrumental in the negotiations regarding the amalgamation of the HMA state branches into one unified HMAA. This involved lengthy discussions with each of the state bodies participating, and where possible, face to face meetings. Matt’s well-known diplomacy and natural charm no doubt came to the fore during several of these meetings.

Matt’s background in social media and communication have greatly assisted the HMAA. He worked to make the online website accessible for members to share news and information and instigated the weekly newsletter format which we continue to use today.

Matt has been involved in many aspects of the horticultural industry for over 25 years, with experience in garden writing, radio production, garden travel and a vision for sharing horticulture knowledge digitally. Matt established Hortiman® in 2010 with the aim of taking gardening to a younger audience.

Matt has worked with Greenlife Industry Australia (Formerly Nursery & Garden Industry Australia), is a Tour Leader for Ross Garden Tours, and is a teacher with TAFE NSW.

Matt has been heavily involved as an MC and a presenter with major horticultural events held annually across the country including Sydney’s Royal Easter Show and the Queensland Garden Expo.

Matt has received several awards over the years – recognising his enthusiasm and dedication to the industry. These included:

  • Australian Institute of Horticulture’s ‘Young Horticulturist of the Year’. (2012)
  • HMAA Social Media Laurel for 2013-2014.
  • Nursery & Garden Industry of NSW & ACT (NGINA)– Allan Seale Award (2014).
  • Nursery & Garden Industry of NSW & ACT (NGINA) – Fusion Gold Award (2015).

Matt is a loving husband and a doting father and he is a much-loved and respected member of his extended horticultural family.
