Killing Dormant Bacteria

Most STC readers are very familiar with the growing problem of antibiotic resistance and the consequent need for the discovery of new antibiotics. Most of the time, we consider antibiotic resistance as a genetic trait of bacteria. But there is also phenotypic resistance, such as that expressed by bacteria in biofilms or, germane to this post, non-growing bacteria (sometimes referred to as metabolically dormant or stationary phase bacteria). How can we kill such cells?
