HMAA’s continuing support of Victorian Schools Garden Program

Habitat by AB Bishop has been donated to winners of the Habitat Garden category for the Victorian Schools Garden Program awards.

The Victorian Schools Garden Program (VSGP) was established in 1977 by Paul Crowe OAM and the late Kevin Heinze, who in 2000 was one of the two inaugural inductees into the HMAA Hall of Fame. The VSGP offers support, information, garden visits, awards and grants for gardening activities in Victorian schools.

Since 2017, HMA Vic and now HMAA has been a sponsor of the VSGP awards program. In 2024 HMAA was asked to give a new name to the supported award. The title ‘Habitat Garden’ was settled on which was welcomed by the program. The HMAA is looking forward to seeing many schools entering this category in 2024.

In addition to the financial contribution, AB Bishop, who is an HMAA member and Horticultural Editor of ABC Gardening Australia magazine, offered to donate signed copies of her book Habitat to the three winning schools in this category. VSGP Coordinator Tania Karamitos was delighted to accept AB’s generous donation and says the books will be gratefully received when she passes them on to the winning schools. Tania expressed thanks to HMAA and to AB.

The Best Habitat School Garden award winners will be announced at the 2024 VSGP Award Presentation Ceremony on Thursday, November 21 at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne.
