Biochar in herb beds

Horticulturists at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria have renewed the Herb and Medicinal Garden beds with soil-less potting mixes containing Biochar. This followed curatorial discussions with Horticulturist and Curator of the Herb and Medicinal Collection Renee Wierzbicki, who is described as a living encyclopedia on herbal and medicinal plants.

Other innovations organised by Renee include the subtle iron barriers to prevent creeping Thymus spp. from creating identify confusion and her use of rustic but an engaging approach to plant labels whose availability are a constant bane for botanic gardens!
