Gail Thomas visited the new laser light show that is sparkling in Geelong and has a tip about a similar show in Queensland.
While the Geelong Botanic Gardens’ historic 1859 gingko tree and adjoining bronze cranes have been showcasing their flourish of autumn hues, as the season turns to winter, they are shedding a new vibrant pink and blue and purple in the dead of night!
Eclipse: In Bloom is inspired by native Australian flora and pollinators including the iconic blue banded bee. It is a laser light show that’s transforming the gardens after dark. Produced by Laservision in partnership with City of Greater Geelong, visitors follow a self-guided-walk through glowing canopies, giant blooms, and a luminous nocturnal world that brings botanical identity to life in a completely new way.
Paths bathed in colourful florals, the normally white Hitchcock fountain transformed with pink hues, trees lit in every-changing colours while the dragon tree is framed in a curtained entrance which, from another vantage point, takes on an eery façade as if marooned on an island surrounded by turbulent waters. Meander along the paths to find a butterfly or bees flitting around the flowers, or a bonfire, and while we may often talk to the trees, there’s one talking back, offering sage horticultural advice!

Concurrently until July 26, 2026 and also produced by Laservision, is another event, Beyond | Sirromet Winery at Mt Cotton 30km south east of Brisbane. Beyond takes guests on a 2km self-guided trail through the stunning grounds of Sirromet Winery after dark, through 25+ large-scale light, laser, projection and interactive installations. Expect AI-interactive gardens that bloom as you move through them, luminous holograms, laser fields, falling stars, and a dramatic laser tunnel finale. It’s a new experience for Queensland – and a breathtaking setting to discover it in.
